#Add Asset (Add Vehicle / Add Gear)

The Add Asset page is where you create a new vehicle or gear item in your account. Once created, you can assign it to a garage, add documents, log readings/expenses, and create maintenance tasks.

#How to get here

Common entry points:

  • From Vehicles & Gear: tap the + button → choose Add vehicle or Add gear / add asset
  • From Garage Details: open the garage’s manage menu → Add Vehicle / Add Gear

#What you see on this page

#1) Domain (required)

At the top, select a Domain (what kind of thing you’re adding), such as:

  • Automobile (car/truck/etc)
  • Aircraft
  • Watercraft
  • Appliance
  • Equipment

After you select a domain, the page reveals the fields relevant to that type.

#2) Identifier + Lookup (optional, domain dependent)

Some domains support scan + lookup to prefill details.

Examples:

  • Automobiles: VIN
  • Aircraft: Tail number

When available, you may see:

  • A scan button (camera/photo-based) to capture the identifier
  • A lookup action that fetches details to help prefill make/model/year
  • A Lookup results card you can review before applying

Privacy note: Lookup sends the identifier to MaintenanceFreak to prefill metadata before creating the asset.

#3) Basic details (required/optional depending on domain)

Typical fields include:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Year
  • Identifier (VIN / Tail number / HIN, etc)

If lookup is available, these fields may be prefilled after you confirm lookup results.

Use Nickname to make items easy to recognize in lists (for example, “Daily Driver”).

#5) Garage selection (required for most consumer flows)

For consumer accounts, a garage assignment is often required so tasks, documents, and collaboration are scoped correctly.

  • If you have garages you can edit (captain/member), you’ll be able to select one.
  • If you don’t have any eligible garages yet, you’ll be prompted to create a garage first.

See: Garages → Add a new garage

#6) Create asset

Tap Create asset to save.

If the form is incomplete, the page will highlight what’s missing.

#Primary workflows

  1. Open Add Asset
  2. Choose a vehicle domain (Automobile / Aircraft / Watercraft)
  3. (Optional) Scan the identifier (VIN/Tail number)
  4. (Optional) Run Lookup and confirm the results
  5. Confirm Garage selection
  6. Tap Create asset

Next steps:

#Create gear (appliances/equipment)

  2. Choose Appliance or Equipment
  3. Select a type (or “Other” if needed)

#Troubleshooting

  • Scan button is disabled
    • Grant camera permission in your device settings and try again.
